After its explosive debut at Marrickville Town Hall earlier this year Rembetika (a.k.a. the Greek Blues) comes to the Factory Theatre on Saturday July 5th and will be the largest production of its kind. ‘Out of the Blue’ and Muse Events team up to present what was described by the Greek media as “a landmark event for music lovers everywhere”.
Rembetika was the music of the urban Greek underground from the 1920’s and one could only truly understand and experience Rembetika by living in that era; until now. The production team has recreated on stage the look, feel and atmosphere of a traditional Athens Rembetika den which is then filled by the haunting and brooding music of Rembetika which will transport you back in time to Athens.
“The music of the Greek Blues is moody and reflective one minute, jubilant, boisterous and full of life the next. In the hands of these young musicians Rembetika music receives a new lease on life” says the editor of the Greek Australian Epsilon Magazine. The maestro of Rembetika, Peter Kalandranis explains Rembetika is “not just a sound. It is a way of life”.
A Night of Greek Blues is an event easily enjoyed by anyone (Greek and non-Greek alike). While it is performed in Greek, subtitles with English translations of the lyrics and narration will be displayed.
