Life with Ashley intrudes on film school drop-out Chris Butler’s life with his eccentric teenage sister Ashley. Over seven days he helps her plan a party as a decoy, to lure her unsuspecting, virginal crush into their psychological labyrinth of obsession so that Ashley may have her way. But what happens when plans become actions, when what’s in our heads meets what’s in our beds, and the way things are meets the way they ought to be? A story that captures the complexities of love and infatuation, the medley of apathy and passion that swirls in the heads of Ashley and Chris, whilst learning the life’s rules, struggling to fit into a society, and aspiring to create.

Even though this intimate portrait of a brother and sister on the cusp of adulthood may well seem like a well-crafted mockumentary, I assure you its not. Life with Ashley shows an frank and naked portrayal of young Australian people like never before, equally disturbing as it is strangely engrossing. This self-reflexive, voyeuristic, confessional, self-indulgent and at times self-loathing documentary is crafted with considerable determination and flair, acting as both a critique and celebration of contemporary Australian teen life.

Questions, fashion, filmmaking, music, sex, eating, exercise and a whole lot of sitting around – this is Life with Ashley.
