As the former conductor of the Sarajevo City Choir, Sladjana Hodzic knew of the positive effects of music on people and their lives. Coming to Australia in the 90s after fleeing the troubles in Bosnia-Herzegovina, she had the urge to help fellow refugee women to cope with their grief, trauma, and to ease their settlement process into Australia.

And so, Sladjana Hodzic founded The Blue River Choir – a music-healing group consisting of 20 women who farewelled their homeland in the event of war.

Under the steady guidance of their conductor, these women have given over 400 performances around Australia, wowing audiences with their Sevdalinka – traditional songs of love, loss and destiny. Taking their name from a poem by lauded Bosnian poet Mak Dizdar, the blue river is symbolic of the spiritual connection between land and soul.

As part of The Sydney Fringe Festival, The Blue River Choir and special guests will perform at the Factory Theatre. Expect one of the most beautiful women’s choirs accompanied by traditional Balkan instruments and an unforgettable journey deep into the heart of the Balkans.
