The wonderful musician, singer and songwriter Joan Wasser – AKA – Joan As Police Woman, is coming to Australian capital cities in June this year to headline a tour with her band. Flying only just under the radar of mainstream audiences, this tour could easily be one of the richest and most satisfying musical highlights of the year.

These much anticipated shows come hot on the heels of her fourth solo album release – a collection called The Deep Field. The record begins with the words “I want you to fall in love with me,” (not an unreasonable expectation for many music fans) and continues to unfurl an unashamed lust for life. It’s unquestionably her best, most significant album yet – in Joan’s own words, “my most open, joyous record.” A rocking, soulful journey, The Deep Field is Joan’s most personal, and her most universal album to date.

Her latest release follows the critical and commercial success of her previous albums, Real Life and To Survive and it confirms, if confirmation were needed, that Joan Wasser is a truly original talent; utterly captivating both on record and on stage.

Until her previous albums were released, Joan Wasser was best known as a member of indie rock bands, The Dambuilders, Black Beetle and Those Bastard Souls. As a violinist and vocalist, she contributed to albums by everyone from Nirvana through to The Scissor Sisters, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Sheryl Crow, Sparklehorse and Depeche Mode’s David Gahan. She was then a regular favourite member in Antony and The Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright’s bands – all of which stands as testament to her inspired musical heritage.

Some artists play a part, act stuff out, and like to hide behind imagery. That’s fine, but it’s not for everyone. Some, like Joan, want to communicate direct, to tell the truth, and share the honesty. To honour themselves and their audience. It may be cliché to read about it but wonderful to experience. Because this is real life.
