Some people make a mark, they make an impression, they leave a lasting legacy from which others gain joy and inspiration. Simon Holmes was one of those people. In person and in music, the founding guitarist of revered Australian band The Hummingbirds did all those things and more, creating a body of work which sings down the years with shining guitar pop brilliance, forging a path from the then hitherto completely underground music scene of Sydney in the late 80s/90s to a national and indeed international presence.

The Hummingbirds gained a top 10 hit with their song ‘Blush’, their debut album LoveBuzz was named in the Top 100 Australian albums and Simon produced superb albums for the likes of Custard and the Fauves.

To the devastation of family, friends and music fans in Australia and beyond, Simon passed away in mid-July. His humble nature, his incredible musical talent and the simple life-affirming wisdom he offered to not just musicians and fans but everyone he dealt with in life are deeply missed. And thus the passing of such a brilliant figure cannot go uncelebrated, his legacy and brilliance cannot go unremarked. With that in mind, a collection of some of Australia’s finest bands is gathering to celebrate Simon’s life and music.

“Hindsight – a Night For Simon”, to be held at the Factory Theatre on Sunday, December 3, will see an incredible line-up of iconic Australian bands/artists come together to mark the occasion. Pulled together as mini festival of sorts, the event will start at 2.30pm and feature the astonishing bill of Ratcat, Custard, Ups & Downs, Jodi & Trish (The Clouds), Smudge, Disneyfist, Dusty Ravens, The Aerial Maps, Alannah Russack, The Tall Grass (Peter Fenton & Jamie Hutchings), Mary & Matt (Even As We Speak), plus a number of others.

It is a testament to his impact and legacy that such a line-up is possible, every band having a direct connection to Simon and keenly aware of his place in the history of Australian music. As a celebration of a man and the music he created and inspired, we feel such a gathering will serve as a fitting tribute to a profoundly important man, with all proceeds going to his family. To celebrate his life and enjoy some of Australia’s most revered bands, we invite you to attend.
