A sensual dance performed by a woman in a mehfil (gathering) of aristocratic men. The dance form emerged during the Mughal era in Hindustan – modern-day India – and gained popularity when it was depicted with all the bells and whistles in iconic Bollywood movies like Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Pakeezah (1972) and Umrao Jaan (1981).

You may have watched a million mujras in Bollywood movies. Or you may have never even heard of one. Either way, Trikone Australia’s premier cultural event of 2020, Mujra Nights will be unlike anything you have ever seen.

A timeless Bollywood tradition is being rekindled in the cultural heart of Sydney, with dazzling costumes, seductive dance performances and … a gender-bending twist.

In this reimagining of a traditional mujra, queer men and women are reclaiming the performance space as a statement of their freedom of expression and sexuality.

Live music performances, comic skits and an atmospheric setting are also part of the draw
