Rainer Werner Fassbinder was one of the most prolific directors in the history of the cinema. In just over 14 years he wrote and directed 60 films for the big and small screens, until his career was cut short by a cocaine overdose at the age of 37. Danish film director Christian Braad Thomsen was a close friend of Fassbinder, fashioning To Love Without Demands from the lengthy, candid, otherwise unseen interviews he shot with him in the 1970s. Beginning with Fassbinder’s volatile childhood in post-war Germany, the seven-chapter film provides an illuminating, intimate and moving tribute to a man who reached a large international audience without ever compromising his unique vision, and to work that interpreted 20th century German history from the collapse of the Weimar republic to the terrorism of the 1970s.
