“I don’t want to make music as anyone knows it,” Morton Subotnick recalls telling analogue synth pioneers Robert Moog and Don Buchla in the mid 1960s. For the last half a century, that’s exactly what modular synthesis has represented: an alternative to conventional approaches. I Dream of Wires explores the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer and the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. Inventors, musicians and enthusiasts including Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode), Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), Carl Craig, Gary Numan and John Foxx show off their systems and explain why they opt to use this volatile but ultimately rewarding technology. Meanwhile, a new generation of dance and electronica artists discuss why they’ve stepped away from laptops to embrace the sound and physicality of modular synthesizers. What started out as a vintage revival in the 90s has grown into an underground phenomenon, with a growing market of obsessives craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces.
