Name any Hollywood blockbuster and you can be sure there is a Turkish equivalent. From Star Wars to Rambo, and The Wizard of Oz to The Exorcist, the majority of the high-grossing American films have been given the Turkish treatment. Since the 1960s, the Turkish film industry – aka Yeşilçam – has been one of the most prolific producers of films in the world, and one buoyed by strong demand; however without proper training, funding or support, it has survived by embracing a copy culture. Having grown up on these classics, director Cem Kaya takes us on a nostalgic and uproarious journey through this period in his nation’s film history. In the same vain as Not Quite Hollywood, Remake, Remix, Rip-off is a joyous celebration the heyday of shameless exploitation cinema in Turkey.
