Suspecting that people around him are transforming into malevolent shape-shifters, Wyatt flees to New York City to seek out his estranged childhood friend Christian. As mysterious horrors close in on Wyatt must decide whether to protect his only pal from what he believes to be an impending war or from himself, as he slowly loses grip with reality. Crafting a genre-bending story that ponders questions of alienation, trust and societal presumptions around masculinity, director Perry Blackshear has garnered comparisons to Darren Aronofsky’s Pi and Rian Johnson’s Brick for making a debut indie on a DIY micro-budget. A thematic counterpart to It Follows and John Carpenter’s They Live with a decidedly Hitchcockian style, They Look Like People was the breakout film at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival.
