At what point does an idea become a crime? Does engaging in online conversations about rape, torture and murder constitute criminal behaviour? Filmmaker Erin Lee Carr explores these questions through the stranger-than-fiction story of Gilberto “The Cannibal Cop” Valle, who was charged with conspiring to kidnap, cook and eat several women in New York City in 2012. Featuring intimate interviews with Valle and his family, as well as insights from lawyers, journalists, psychological professionals and criminal experts involved in the case, Thought Crimes delves into this highly complicated issue with clarity of vision and a deft touch. Part George Orwell in tone and Erroll Morris in execution, this is a deeply intriguing and at times darkly humorous documentary that examines whether someone can be found guilty on the basis of his or her most dangerous thoughts.
