Celebrate four decades of powerful voices, shared joy, and community as Café of the Gate of Salvation marks its 40th anniversary with a landmark concert at the Factory Theatre.

Expect soulful voices, foot-stomping rhythms, and some very special guests joining the celebration

Café of the Gate of Salvation began in 1986 with a handwritten sign scrawled on a café wall: “Gospel choir forming, Buddhists welcome.” From that open invitation grew one of Australia’s most respected gospel choirs. Founded and directed by the inimitable Tony Backhouse Artistic Director, the Sydney-based ensemble has spent forty years singing for joy, connection, social conscience and the sheer love of music.

Inspired by the African-American gospel tradition, Café of the Gate of Salvation is renowned for rich a cappella sound, outstanding soloists, passionate four-part harmonies, and rousing arrangements. Their repertoire spans traditional spirituals, gospel classics, and original Backhouse works, delivered with warmth, rhythmic drive, and unmistakable heart. Today, the choir is a vibrant 30-voice ensemble welcoming singers of all faiths and backgrounds.

Join us for an unforgettable night where music moves the spirit, voices unite, and the next chapter of this 40-year journey comes alive.
