Astral People proudly presents the long overdue Sydney debut of an icon - ASHA PUTHLI. Sunday 9th June at The Factory Theatre

Experience the stirring live performance of a pioneering legend, celebrating her global influence and legacy as an artist. World citizen - iconoclast - daring experimentalist - self-identified space cadet - style personified.

Asha has made an undeniable imprint on popular culture. Her cinematic story is an awe-inspiring journey across continents and musical genres.

She has released 10 brilliant albums, danced at Martha Graham’s school, modelled at Studio 54, appeared semi-nude in a Merchant-Ivory film, been dressed by top designers such as Manolo Blahnik, and photographed by pop-art luminary Andy Warhol.

A pioneer of jazz, funk, soul, and electronic dance music, whose five-decade career has enjoyed multiple resurgences whilst cementing a cult status. Since the 1970s, Asha Puthli has enamoured the world with her singular musical mode amidst the other forays of her artistic expression.

From her stirring vocals on free jazz legend Ornette Coleman’s Science Fiction to her debut self-titled disco album The Devil Is Loose dubbed by The New York Times as an “instant classic”, Asha has moved between Indian classical, avant-garde jazz, traditional jazz, R&B, soul, funk, disco, ambient, new wave, new age, and Bollywood. The eclectic, often outré artwork

that graces her albums stem from her early interest in glam and glitter rock. Her silken, ethereal soprano voice laced over dance beats created the sonic template that would later rocket artists like Blondie and Donna Summer to worldwide popularity. Yet Puthli's recordings remain testaments to her pioneering musical vision.

The wide palette of modern dance music from club culture to hip hop continues to feel her alluring touch. Asha’s iconic track Space Talk became popular with everyone from David Mancuso and the infamous New York Loft crowd to afro cosmic pioneers Beppe Loda and Daniele Baldelli in Italy. Years later the likes of Jay Z, Notorious B.I.G. and Diplo would

sample her work further breathing life into her timeless output.

In 2023 Asha released her first remix album Disco Mystic with remixes from the likes of Maurice Fulton and Psychemagik. This followed her critically acclaimed Space Talk EP featuring remixes of her iconic track by house music legend Dimitri From Paris.

Embarking on her first world tour in four decades - don’t miss your chance to see Asha Puthli in Sydney performing her long-lasting hits with an incredible live band. A once-in-a lifetime opportunity for her fans, old and new.
